Cold & Flu - Flu Outbreak Update

Widespread Flu Covers Much of U.S.

Despite a slight decrease in flu activity from last week, widespread cases of influenza continue to cover nearly the entire U.S. Conditions may even worsen as colder temperatures arrive through the remainder of autumn.

Almost all of the influenza cases reported to the government`s Centers for Disease Control are H1N1 viruses, also commonly referred to as the "swine flu."

46 of the 50 states are reporting widespread influenza activity. This is actually a slight decrease from last week when 48 states had widespread conditions. The great number of widespread activity at this early part of the flu season is unprecedented.

Regional influenza activity was noted in Mississippi, Nebraska, Texas, Hawaii, as well as Puerto Rico.

Meanwhile, local activity was reported in the District of Columbia, with sporadic activity in Guam.

The CDC recommends that high risk groups, which include the elderly and children less than 23 months of age, get vaccinated on a yearly basis.

In addition to vaccines, there are other things that can be done to minimize your risk for contracting the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with those who are sick.
  • Avoid exposing others when you are sick. Stay home from work or school if you are exhibiting symptoms.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Every week throughout the flu season, WeatherBug will provide updates on the latest flu outbreaks. Be sure to check back to get the latest flu report in your area.
